Bingnan Fm
Type Locality and Naming
The type section is located in the Taojiadu Street, northwest of Panzhihua City, Sichuan Province. Reference section is sited in Baoding, southwest of Panzhihua City, Sichuan Province. Originally, the coal-bearing strata around the Panzhihua was named as “Nalajing Coal” by Fanchu Zeng in 1945, including the “Bingnan Purple Bed”, “Taojiadu Bed”, “Daqiaodi Bed” and “Dajing Bed”, in ascending order, additionally, the “Bingnan purple bed” was interpreted of Lower most of Triassic. But the “Bingnan purple Bed” and the upon “Taojiadu Bed” was combined and designed into Bingnan formation by the First Regional Geological Survey of Yunnan in 1967 and suggestive of Norian of Late Triassic.

Lithology and Thickness
This formation is mainly consisted by yellowish green or purple red conglomerate, sandstone, siltstone, mudstone, and marlstone, with relative consistently thickness. The thickest strata exposed are in Panzhihua of 370 m but decreased rapidly to the peripheries and eventually disappeared.
Relationships and Distribution
Lower contact
The Bingnan Fm is unconformably overlying the Permian Emeishan Basalt Fm or granite and is continuously deposited from the marlstone.
Upper contact
Argillaceous limestone dominated interval in the top of Bingnan Fm to the overlying Daqiaodi Fm.
Regional extent
This formation is sporadically distributed in Panzhihua, Yanda or Xichang.
